ר׳ אברהם אבלי הלוי גומבינר

ר׳ אברהם אבלי הלוי גומבינר (c. 1637–1683), universally known as the מגן אברהם, was one of the most influential Polish halakhists of the seventeenth century. Born in Gombin, he lost his parents amid the upheavals associated with the Cossack massacres and continued his studies in Lithuania with his relative ר׳ יעקב יצחק גומבינר. He subsequently settled in Kalisz, where he served as a dayan and headed a yeshiva, apparently without holding the chief rabbinate. His great commentary on שולחן ערוך אורח חיים was originally called נר ישראל and was completed in an early form while he was still young. Revised in light of newly printed halakhic literature, it was published posthumously at Dyhernfurth in 1692 under the name מגן אברהם. Its compressed analysis mediates between the rulings of ר׳ יוסף קארו and ר׳ משה איסרליש, incorporates custom and kabbalistic practice, and became a central authority for Ashkenazic observance. His זית רענן on ילקוט שמעוני and a commentary on Tosefta Nezikin were also issued after his death. He died in Kalisz in poverty but with an enduring reputation as a foundational אחרון.
