ר׳ אברהם בורנשטיין

ר׳ אברהם בורנשטיין (1839–1910), the Avnei Nezer, was a major Polish posek and founder of the Sochatchov Hasidic dynasty. Born in Będzin to ר׳ זאב נחום בורנשטיין, he displayed exceptional Talmudic ability and became a disciple and son-in-law of ר׳ מנחם מנדל מורגנשטרן of Kotsk. The Kotsker’s insistence on truth and intellectual precision deeply shaped his synthesis of Hasidic devotion and exacting halakhic analysis. After his father-in-law’s death he served successively as rabbi of Parczew (1862), Krośniewice (1866), Nasielsk (1876), and Sochaczew (1883–1910). In Sochaczew he founded a yeshiva and emerged as a rebbe, creating the Sochatchov court. His אגלי טל, published in 1905, offers a systematic treatment of the Sabbath labours and a famous introduction defending the joy of Torah study. His vast responsa, אבני נזר, cover all four sections of Shulchan Aruch and were published mainly after his death. He also explored a religious agricultural settlement in Ottoman Palestine, sending family representatives, though Ottoman restrictions frustrated the plan. He died in Sochaczew in 1910 and was succeeded by his son ר׳ שמואל בורנשטיין, already represented separately in this project.
