ר׳ אברהם דנציג

ר׳ אברהם בן ר׳ יחיאל מיכל דנציג (1748–1820), universally known as בעל חיי אדם, was a merchant, Vilna dayan and one of the most influential modern codifiers of practical halakhah. Born in Danzig, he entered the Prague yeshiva at fourteen and studied with ר׳ יחזקאל לנדא and ר׳ יוסף ליברמן. He subsequently settled in Vilna but initially refused salaried rabbinic office, supporting his family through commerce and travelling to the fairs of Leipzig and Königsberg. His experience as both a major scholar and working householder shaped an unusually accessible legal project. חיי אדם reorganized the laws of אורח חיים around the rhythms of daily, Sabbath and festival life, while נשמת אדם supplied deeper legal analysis. חכמת אדם and בינת אדם performed a comparable service principally for יורה דעה. He critically sifted centuries of post–שולחן ערוך rulings rather than merely abridging them, and later authorities—including משנה ברורה—frequently cite his conclusions. A devastating Vilna gunpowder-magazine explosion in 1803 destroyed his home, injured his family and contributed to the loss of his fortune. He instituted the family’s annual פולווער־פורים thanksgiving and later accepted service as a dayan. His writing joined exacting halakhah to ethical instruction, lay education and practical religious discipline. תפילה זכה, printed in חיי אדם, became widely recited before Kol Nidrei. He hoped to settle in Jerusalem and wrote שערי צדק for laws dependent on the Land of Israel, but died in Vilna before realizing that plan.
