ר׳ אברהם יהושע השל מאפטא

ר׳ אברהם יהושע השל מאפטא (1748–1825), known as the Apter Rav and אוהב ישראל, was a major fourth-generation Hasidic leader. Born at Żmigród into an established rabbinic family, he studied under ר׳ אלימלך מליז׳נסק and was also associated with ר׳ יחיאל מיכל מזלוטשוב. His first rabbinate was at Kolbuszowa; he then served at Opatów, whose Yiddish name Apta became his permanent designation. In 1808 he accepted the rabbinate of Iași in Moldavia, but communal conflict—particularly with Chabad-oriented circles—contributed to his departure. He settled finally in Medzhybizh, the foundational town of early Hasidism, where he led without the same burden of a formal rabbinate. His teaching centred on אהבת ישראל, responsibility for the Jewish collective, prayer and the spiritual work of the tsaddik. He was treated by contemporaries as a senior figure among the Polish and Ukrainian Hasidic leaders. His principal collections, אוהב ישראל and תורת אמת, were published after his death, and the first became his enduring popular name. He died in Medzhybizh on 5 Nisan 5585 and requested a modest epitaph identifying him simply as one who loved Israel.
