ר׳ עזריאל הילדסהיימר

ר׳ עזריאל הילדסהיימר (1820–1899) was a German Orthodox rabbi, educator and communal organizer who created a model joining traditional Torah scholarship with university learning. Born in Halberstadt, he studied under ר׳ יעקב עטלינגר in Altona and pursued Semitic languages and philosophy in Berlin and Halle, receiving a doctorate in 1844. In 1851 he became rabbi of Eisenstadt, where he founded a yeshiva and school whose curriculum combined intensive Talmud with languages and general studies. Opposition from both Reform advocates and traditionalists accompanied his Hungarian work. Called to Berlin’s independent Orthodox congregation in 1869, he founded the Rabbiner-Seminar für das orthodoxe Judenthum in 1873 and led it until his death. The seminary trained rabbis for German and Eastern European communities; its faculty included ר׳ דוד צבי הופמן and ר׳ אברהם ברלינר. Hildesheimer also organized relief for Russian Jewry, supported the Jewish settlement of Ottoman Palestine and defended Orthodox communal autonomy. His responsa and articles were collected posthumously.
