ר׳ עזריאל בן מנחם מגירונה

ר׳ עזריאל בן מנחם מגירונה was an early thirteenth-century Catalan kabbalist and one of the principal speculative writers of the Girona circle. His personal biography is almost entirely unknown. He must be distinguished from his older contemporary ר׳ עזרא בן שלמה מגירונה; medieval copyists and older scholarship repeatedly merged their names and writings. A surviving letter from ר׳ יצחק סגי נהור to Girona identifies the latter as his teacher and appears to rebuke the open dissemination of esoteric doctrine. The poet ר׳ משולם בן שלמה דפיירה, in turn, praised ר׳ עזריאל as a leader and teacher among Girona's kabbalists. Later tradition presents him as a teacher of ר׳ משה בן נחמן, but recent scholarship emphasizes intellectual proximity without treating a direct teacher–student relationship as certain. ר׳ עזריאל combined early kabbalistic traditions with Neoplatonic concepts. His writings distinguish the unknowable אין סוף from the revealed divine life of the ten ספירות and explain creation as emanation without separating divine manifestation from its source. His corpus includes שער השואל, a question-and-answer exposition of the sefirot; commentaries on ספר יצירה, rabbinic aggadah and prayer; דרך האמונה ודרך הכפירה; mystical explanations of daily and festival liturgy; סוד הקרבנות; and an important letter sent from Girona to Burgos. Several works circulated under the names of ר׳ עזרא or ר׳ משה בן נחמן, while other texts once credited to ר׳ עזריאל are later adaptations or plagiarism. His influence is visible in the language and symbolic structures of later Catalan Kabbalah.
