ר׳ ברוך בן יצחק אבן אלבאליה
ר׳ ברוך בן יצחק אבן אלבאליה (1077–1126) was an Andalusian Talmudist, judge, academy head and teacher of philosophy. Born in Seville, he was the son of ר׳ יצחק בן ברוך אבן אלבאליה, the astronomer, communal leader and halakhist associated with the court of al-Muʿtamid. His father's household exposed him to rabbinic learning, mathematical science and the Arabic intellectual culture of eleventh-century al-Andalus. The fullest narrative of his youth comes from ספר הקבלה, written decades later by his nephew and student ר׳ אברהם אבן דאוד. According to that family account, ר׳ יצחק and ר׳ יצחק אלפסי had conducted a bitter scholarly controversy. As ר׳ יצחק lay dying in Granada in 1094, he instructed his seventeen-year-old son to seek mutual forgiveness from ר׳ יצחק אלפסי and to study in his academy. ר׳ ברוך went to Lucena, delivered the message, and was received with exceptional warmth; the chronicle says that ר׳ יצחק אלפסי promised to become a father to him. The episode plausibly preserves family memory but its detailed speech is retrospective literary testimony, not a contemporary transcript. ר׳ ברוך studied in Lucena for nine years, alongside his exact contemporary ר׳ יוסף אבן מיגאש. This chronology places his apprenticeship from his father's death in 1094 until the death of ר׳ יצחק אלפסי in 1103. Later tradition remembers the two young scholars as close friends, although ר׳ יוסף—not ר׳ ברוך—succeeded their teacher as head of the Lucena academy. ר׳ ברוך then established his mature career in Córdoba as a dayyan and head of a yeshivah. He taught numerous students and possessed an education extending beyond Talmud and practical halakhah into Greco-Arabic philosophy. His most consequential known student was his sister's son ר׳ אברהם אבן דאוד, who spent his formative years in his uncle's household. Through ר׳ ברוך, the future historian and philosopher received training in rabbinics, Bible, Hebrew poetry and Jewish and Arabic philosophy; this makes the Córdoba academy an important link between the halakhic school of ר׳ יצחק אלפסי and the philosophical synthesis later attempted in האמונה הרמה. ר׳ ברוך also belonged to the literary circle of ר׳ יהודה הלוי and ר׳ משה אבן עזרא. A poem by ר׳ יהודה הלוי plays on his name—ברוך, 'blessed'—and testifies to his standing among Spanish Jewish intellectuals. Both poets composed elegies at his death: ר׳ משה אבן עזרא's begins עינות תהום המה ולא עינים, and ר׳ יהודה הלוי's begins מר לעם יקראו עצרה. No securely titled independent book by ר׳ ברוך is known to survive. Later sources remember halakhic decisions and a substantial teaching career, but these should not be inflated into a lost codex without evidence. His historical importance instead rests on judicial leadership in Córdoba, his place in the intellectual network of the great Andalusian poets, and his transmission of Talmudic and philosophical learning to ר׳ אברהם אבן דאוד. He died in 1126, about fifteen years before ר׳ יוסף אבן מיגאש, which may help explain why the latter became more prominent in subsequent halakhic memory.
