ר׳ חיים הלברשטאם

ר׳ חיים הלברשטאם (1793–1876), known as the דברי חיים, was the rabbi of Nowy Sącz and founder of the Sanz Hasidic dynasty. Born in Tarnogród to ר׳ אריה לייבוש הלברשטאם, he studied with leading Galician and Polish scholars and married a daughter of ר׳ ברוך פרנקל־תאומים, author of ברוך טעם. His Hasidic formation included the circles of ר׳ יעקב יצחק הלוי הורוביץ מלובלין, ר׳ נפתלי צבי הורוביץ מרופשיץ and ר׳ צבי הירש אייכנשטיין מזידיטשוב. After an initial rabbinate at Rudnik nad Sanem, he was appointed rabbi of Nowy Sącz in 1830. There he founded a major yeshiva and Hasidic court, drew thousands of followers, answered questions across eastern Europe and became renowned for extensive charity. His halakhic collection דברי חיים addresses responsa, divorce documents, ritual baths and other practical law; his Torah and festival teachings were also published under the same title. He took a forceful role in contemporary disputes, most famously opposing the princely court culture of Sadigura, while remaining an authoritative posek far beyond his own followers. He died in Nowy Sącz on 25 Nisan 5636 and was buried in the Jewish cemetery on Rybacka Street. His sons and descendants established Sanz, Shinova, Bobov, Klausenburg and related dynastic branches.
