ר׳ שמריהו יוסף חיים קניבסקי

ר׳ שמריהו יוסף חיים קניבסקי (1928–2022), generally called ר׳ חיים קניבסקי, was a Lithuanian-Haredi Talmudist, prolific halakhic author and communal leader. Born in Pinsk to ר׳ יעקב ישראל קניבסקי, the Steipler, and Pesha Miriam, sister of ר׳ אברהם ישעיהו קרליץ, he immigrated with his family to Mandatory Palestine in 1934 and grew up in Bnei Brak. He studied at Tiferet Zion and the Lomza Yeshiva in Petah Tikva and was deeply shaped by his father and maternal uncle. In 1951/52 he married Batsheva Esther, daughter of ר׳ יוסף שלום אלישיב, and spent decades learning in Kollel Chazon Ish. His exacting annual study cycle encompassed the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds, midrash and numerous minor tractates. His ספרים cover neglected areas of halakhah and rabbinic literature: דרך אמונה systematizes agricultural law in Maimonides’ code, דרך חכמה addresses Temple law, and שונה הלכות arranges practical rulings from משנה ברורה. Although he held no conventional rabbinic office, thousands sought concise answers, advice and blessings at his Rashbam Street home. After the deaths of ר׳ יוסף שלום אלישיב and ר׳ אהרן יהודה ליב שטינמן, he became one of the most authoritative public figures in Lithuanian Haredi society. He died at home in Bnei Brak on 18 March 2022 and was buried in the city’s Zikhron Meir cemetery.
