ר׳ חיים לייב הלוי שמואלביץ
ר׳ חיים לייב הלוי שמואלביץ (1902–1979) was a leading Lithuanian Talmudist, mussar teacher and rosh yeshiva of Mir. Born in Kovno and raised partly in Stutchin, he studied at Shaarei Torah in Grodno under ר׳ שמעון יהודה שקופ before joining Mir about 1924–25. He married Chana Miriam, daughter of ר׳ אליעזר יהודה פינקל, and began giving regular shiurim in 1936. During the Second World War he helped lead Mir's extraordinary flight from Soviet-occupied Lithuania through Vladivostok and Kobe to Shanghai. With ר׳ יחזקאל לוינשטיין he sustained the refugee yeshiva's learning and communal life there until 1947. After six months with the transplanted yeshiva in the United States, he joined Mir in Jerusalem, becoming its rosh yeshiva after his father-in-law's death in 1965. His analytical Talmud lectures reflected the influence of ר׳ שמעון יהודה שקופ, while his intensely delivered ethical discourses drew large audiences. שיחות מוסר, based on talks delivered in 1971–73, became an influential mussar classic; extensive Talmudic manuscripts were published posthumously as שערי חיים. He died in Jerusalem on 3 Tevet 5739 and was buried at Har HaMenuchot.
