ר׳ חיים טירר

ר׳ חיים טירר (1760–1817), known by his Torah commentary באר מים חיים, was an early Hasidic preacher, communal rabbi and author. Born near Buchach, he became a leading disciple of ר׳ יחיאל מיכל מזלוטשוב and absorbed the emerging Hasidic synthesis of devotional prayer, ethical self-transformation and kabbalistic interpretation. He served communities in the Moldavian–Podolian borderlands, including Mohyliv-Podilskyi, Botoșani and Chișinău, and achieved his greatest renown as rabbi of Chernivtsi. His insistence on traditional communal discipline brought him into conflict with Austrian administrative and modernising pressures. Around 1805 he left Chernivtsi, intending ultimately to settle in the Land of Israel, and again served communities in Moldavia and Bessarabia before reaching Safed. באר מים חיים is a sustained homiletical commentary on the Torah; סידורו של שבת treats the sanctity and practice of Shabbat, while שער התפלה explores prayer. He died in Safed on 27 Kislev 5578 (December 1817) and is buried in its old cemetery. Because early biographical traditions disagree sharply about his birth year and the precise sequence of his rabbinates, approximate map dates are explicitly labelled rather than presented as exact.
