ר׳ חיים ויטאל

ר׳ חיים ויטאל (1542–1620), known by the acronym מהרח״ו and also as Chaim Vital Calabrese, was the principal recorder and transmitter of the teachings of ר׳ יצחק לוריא, the האר״י. Born in Safed to the scribe Joseph Vital Calabrese, whose family originated in Calabria, he studied revealed Torah under ר׳ משה אלשיך and Kabbalah in the intellectual world shaped by ר׳ משה קורדובירו. When the האר״י settled in Safed in 1570, ר׳ חיים became his leading disciple and recorded the new Lurianic system during the master's final two years. After 1572 he organized a circle of disciples and asserted authority over the transmission of those teachings, although other disciples circulated competing recensions. His movements took him through Egypt, Ein al-Zeitun, Jerusalem, Safed and finally Damascus, where he taught Kabbalah and led a scholarly circle. His writings include his own ethical-mystical שערי קדושה, biblical commentary עץ הדעת טוב and autobiographical dream diary ספר החזיונות, alongside the enormous record of the האר״י's teachings later arranged by his son ר׳ שמואל ויטאל as שמונה שערים. Familiar titles such as עץ חיים and שער הגלגולים emerged through several manuscript recensions and later editors, so their attribution requires bibliographic caution. His record became the principal channel through which Lurianic Kabbalah transformed Sephardi spirituality, European Kabbalah, liturgy and later Hasidism.
