ר׳ אליעזר פאפו

ר׳ אליעזר פאפו (1785–1828), renowned by the title of his ethical encyclopedia פלא יועץ, was a Sephardi rabbi, halakhist and communal leader in the Ottoman Balkans. Born in Sarajevo to ר׳ יצחק פאפו, he studied with ר׳ אליהו חיון and ר׳ משה דנון and became known for disciplined learning, charity and practical pastoral leadership. By his late twenties he had moved into Ottoman Bulgaria. In 1819 he briefly served Bucharest’s Sephardi community, then returned to Silistra; from 1820 he was the town’s rabbi and head of its rabbinical court. His writings unite law, ethics, prayer and communal responsibility. פלא יועץ, first printed in Constantinople in 1824, arranges moral and religious guidance alphabetically and became a classic of Sephardi musar. His other writings include אלף המגן, חסד לאלפים, אורות אילים, יעלזו חסידים, חודש האביב, בית תפילה and responsa. Tradition emphasizes his efforts to reconcile disputes, administer charity and redeem an endangered communal member. During an epidemic he ministered to the sick, contracted the illness himself, and died in Silistra on 20 Tishrei 5588. His burial place there remains a pilgrimage site.
