ר׳ אפרים זלמן מרגליות

ר׳ אפרים זלמן בן מנחם מניש מרגליות (1760–1828), known especially through מטה אפרים and שו״ת בית אפרים, was a leading Galician halakhist and one of the scholars of Brody’s celebrated kloyz. Born in Brody into a distinguished learned family, he studied with relatives including ר׳ אלכסנדר סנדר מרגליות and acquired an exceptional reputation for memory and analytic command of Talmud and halakhah. His correspondence connected him with major authorities including ר׳ יחזקאל הלוי לנדא, ר׳ עקיבא איגר and ר׳ משה סופר. Alongside scholarship he established a successful banking and commercial house, whose income allowed him unusual independence: he briefly accepted communal rabbinic standing but did not make the rabbinate his livelihood, instead maintaining a yeshiva in his home and answering questions from distant communities. His works range across all four divisions of Shulchan Aruch, laws of divorce names, Torah commentary, public Torah reading and liturgy. שערי אפרים became a standard guide to Torah-reading procedure, while מטה אפרים, printed posthumously, systematized Ashkenazic practice from Elul through the High Holy Days and Sukkot and remains widely consulted. The responsa בית אפרים display his place in the transregional network of early nineteenth-century poskim. He lived and worked principally in Brody and died there on 4 August 1828.
