ר׳ האי גאון

ר׳ האי בן ר׳ שרירא גאון (939–1038) was gaon of the Pumbedita academy and the pre-eminent halakhic authority at the close of the Babylonian Geonic age. Educated by his father ר׳ שרירא גאון, he assisted him in academy administration and responsa. Both were briefly imprisoned on a false accusation; after their release, ר׳ האי became gaon in 998 while his father was still alive. For four decades questions reached him from communities across North Africa, Spain, Europe and the East. More than eight hundred responsa are attributed to him, alongside Arabic legal monographs on oaths, commerce and other subjects. His rulings combined mastery of the Babylonian Talmud with close attention to inherited practice and commercial reality. He also addressed theology, language and aggadah, warning against crude literalism while remaining cautious about speculative claims. His death in 1038 was widely mourned and conventionally marks the end of the classical Geonic period.
