ר׳ צבי שכטר

ר׳ צבי שכטר (born 1941) is an American Orthodox rosh yeshiva, Talmudist and halakhic decisor. Raised in a rabbinic family in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he studied at Yeshiva University and became an assistant to ר׳ יוסף דוב הלוי סולובייצ׳יק at age twenty-two. He received semikhah and an M.A. in Hebrew literature in 1967 and that year joined the RIETS faculty as its youngest rosh yeshiva. Since 1971 he has headed the Marcos and Adina Katz Kollel and holds the Nathan and Vivian Fink Distinguished Professorial Chair in Talmud. As posek for the Orthodox Union’s Kashruth Division, he addresses contemporary questions in kashrut, medicine, public safety, communal governance and technology. His original halakhic works include ארץ הצבי, בעקבי הצאן and גינת אגוז. נפש הרב, מפניני הרב and דברי הרב preserve teachings, practices and recollections of ר׳ יוסף דוב הלוי סולובייצ׳יק. His thousands of lectures and extensive responsa have made him an influential authority within contemporary Modern Orthodoxy.
