ר׳ יצחק בן מאיר הלוי מדורא

ר׳ יצחק בן מאיר הלוי מדורא was a thirteenth-century Ashkenazic halakhist whose name is attached to the Rhineland town of Düren. He studied in the Franco-German scholarly world and is traditionally associated with ר׳ טוביה בן אליה מווינה and ר׳ מאיר בן ברוך מרוטנבורג. His principal work, שערי דורא, organizes the practical laws of prohibited foods, mixtures, slaughter and related domestic observance. Its concise utility made it a standard medieval Ashkenazic manual. Successive generations surrounded the text with glosses, including traditions associated with ר׳ ישראל איסרלין, ר׳ שלמה לוריא, ר׳ נתן שפירא and ר׳ משה איסרליש, showing how the book remained a living legal text rather than a static treatise. A documentary manual, תיקון שטרות, has also been attributed to an author of the same name, but the identification is not certain and it is therefore omitted from the canonical works list. The surviving evidence supports Düren as his mature centre; other movements and exact lifespan dates remain approximate.
