ר׳ ישעיה בן מאלי דטראני

ר׳ ישעיה בן מאלי דטראני, known as הרי״ד הזקן, was one of medieval Italy’s most original Talmudists and halakhists. He came from Trani in Apulia and was active in the Italian scholarly network, with Venice often identified as an important residence. His writings display close knowledge of both Italian and Franco-German learning, and he corresponded with figures including ר׳ שמחה משפיירא, ר׳ יצחק בן משה מווינה and ר׳ אביגדור כהן מווינה. תוספות רי״ד, preserved in several recensions, offer unusually independent, lucid readings of the Talmud; פסקי רי״ד distil practical conclusions, while ספר המכריע addresses disputed legal questions. His biblical commentary likewise combines philological and rabbinic interpretation. ר׳ צדקיה בן אברהם הרופא, compiler of שבולי הלקט, is associated with his teaching. He must be distinguished from his grandson ר׳ ישעיה בן אליה דטראני, known as הרי״ד הצעיר or ריא״ז.
