ר׳ ישראל יעקב בן שמואל חגיז

ר׳ ישראל יעקב בן שמואל חגיז (1620–1674) was a Moroccan-born halakhist and educator who became a major builder of Jerusalem’s seventeenth-century scholarly world. Born in Fez, he travelled to Italy around 1646 to publish his writings and taught there for roughly a decade. With support from the Vega brothers of Livorno, he moved to Jerusalem around 1657 and established בית יעקב, a well-supported beit midrash and rabbinical academy. Its students included ר׳ משה בן חביב and ר׳ יוסף אלמושנינו, and its programme helped renew organised higher Torah study in the city. ר׳ ישראל יעקב was also a forceful opponent of Shabbetai Tzvi and his movement. His works combine pedagogy, halakhah and Mishnah study: תחילת חכמה and אורח מישור offered structured introductions to learning, while עץ החיים commented on the Mishnah. His responsa, הלכות קטנות, were published posthumously by his son ר׳ משה חגיז and became his best-known halakhic legacy. Around 1673 he travelled to Constantinople intending to publish further work and died there in 1674 before completing the project.
