ר׳ יעקב יוקב עטלינגר

ר׳ יעקב יוקב עטלינגר (1798–1871), known from his Talmud commentary as the ערוך לנר, was a formative German Orthodox rabbi and halakhic authority. Born in Karlsruhe to ר׳ אהרן עטלינגר, he studied with ר׳ אשר וולרשטיין and then at the Würzburg yeshiva of ר׳ אברהם בינג while also attending university. From 1823 he taught in Karlsruhe and from 1825 led the Lemle-Moses Klaus in Mannheim, where his students included ר׳ שמשון רפאל הירש. In 1836 he became chief rabbi and av bet din of Altona, serving the linked communities of Altona, Hamburg and Wandsbek. His Altona yeshiva trained figures including ר׳ עזריאל הילדסהיימר. Ettlinger became a prominent opponent of early Reform initiatives and in 1845 founded the Orthodox periodical Der treue Zionswächter with its Hebrew supplement שומר ציון הנאמן. His ערוך לנר established enduring analytic commentaries on several Talmudic tractates; ביכורי יעקב and the responsa בנין ציון became important halakhic works. He died in Altona in 1871.
