ר׳ לוי יצחק מברדיצ׳ב

ר׳ לוי יצחק מברדיצ׳ב (1740–1809), author of קדושת לוי, was a formative third-generation Hasidic master, communal rabbi and celebrated advocate for the Jewish people. Born in Husaków, Galicia, he received rabbinic learning in an elite family and, through ר׳ שמואל שמלקה הורוויץ, entered the circle of ר׳ דב בער ממזריטש. He served as rabbi in Ryczywół and Żelechów, where his public Hasidic preaching encountered opposition, and in 1772 became rabbi of Pinsk. Conflict with opponents of Hasidism eventually forced him from that post. In 1785 he accepted the rabbinate of Berdychiv and remained there for life, turning the city into one of Hasidism's emblematic centres. He was renowned for ecstatic prayer, accessible preaching and a theological language that persistently interpreted Jews charitably before God, earning the title סנגורן של ישראל. He also defended the Hasidic movement publicly and maintained relationships across its emerging leadership. The first portion of קדושת לוי, on Hanukkah and Purim, appeared in Slavuta in 1798; his sons issued the larger Torah commentary after his death. Its homilies join Kabbalistic symbolism, divine immanence, spiritual psychology and the sanctification of ordinary Jewish life, and it remains a central Hasidic text.
