ר׳ מנחם בן שלמה המאירי

ר׳ מנחם בן שלמה המאירי (1249–1315) was a major Catalan-Provençal Talmudist and legal synthesiser who spent his documented life in Perpignan. His teachers included ר׳ ראובן בן חיים of Narbonne, whose method combined close Talmudic study with attention to the codification of ר׳ משה בן מימון. The Meiri’s monumental בית הבחירה, composed principally from 1287 to 1300, presents the conclusions and reasoning of approximately thirty-five Talmudic tractates in exceptionally clear Mishnaic Hebrew. It incorporates traditions of Provence, Spain, and northern France while arranging disputes and practical outcomes more systematically than ordinary line-by-line commentary. His מגן אבות defended local Provençal customs during controversies with exiles arriving from Spain after 1306, while introductions and historical writings preserved valuable accounts of rabbinic transmission. Modern readers often emphasise his category of law-governed religious societies when discussing relations with non-Jews, though the scope and novelty of that doctrine remain subjects of scholarly debate. Despite his later stature, surviving evidence does not show that he held a formal communal rabbinate or yeshiva appointment. Much of בית הבחירה remained in manuscript until modern publication, contributing to the delayed but now extensive influence of his work. He died at Perpignan in 1315. No authenticated portrait survives.
