ר׳ משה בן חנוך (birth date unknown; conventionally c. 900–c. 965) was a Talmudist, halakhic authority and head of the Córdoba yeshiva whose leadership helped make al-Andalus substantially independent of the Babylonian academies in practical halakhic decision-making. The principal narrative of his life appears in ספר הקבלה, written roughly two centuries later by ר׳ אברהם אבן דאוד. It portrays ר׳ משה as one of four scholars sent from Sura, captured at sea after sailing from Bari, and taken with his wife and young son ר׳ חנוך בן משה to Córdoba. His wife, threatened by the captor, is said to have drowned herself; after the community redeemed father and son, ר׳ משה supposedly entered a study hall anonymously, demonstrated extraordinary learning during a lecture by ר׳ נתן הדיין, and was immediately acknowledged as the superior scholar. Modern scholarship regards this dramatic narrative as historically unacceptable in its received form, although an actual capture during the naval warfare between Umayyad Spain and Fatimid North Africa remains possible. Later evidence instead makes southern Italy his probable point of origin and places his arrival in Córdoba during the 950s. There, under the protection of ר׳ חסדאי אבן שפרוט, he became communal rabbi and headed a large yeshiva. He answered questions from other Andalusian towns, and his responsa were valued alongside those of the Babylonian Geonim. Some entered collections of Geonic responsa, occasionally obscuring their true authorship; later authorities, including ר׳ יצחק בן אבא מארי of Marseilles, quoted his rulings. His school did not end cultural contact with Babylonia, but it reduced Spain's practical dependence on eastern adjudication and trained a local scholarly elite. No systematic authored treatise is securely known. His identifiable literary legacy consists principally of responsa and rulings, several of which remain difficult to distinguish from those of Geonim or other early Andalusian scholars. He died around 965 and was succeeded by his son ר׳ חנוך בן משה. The later contest between ר׳ חנוך and ר׳ יוסף אבן אביתור concerned the succession to this Córdoba leadership and should not be projected backward as an episode in ר׳ משה's own career.
