ר׳ משה טייטלבוים מאוהעל

ר׳ משה טייטלבוים מאוהעל (1759–1841), known from his classic work as the ישמח משה, was a Galician-Hungarian rabbi and a founding figure of Hungarian Hasidism. Born in Przemyśl and trained in the traditional rabbinic world, he served first in Sieniawa. Initially distant from Hasidism, he was introduced to it through his son-in-law and became a devoted disciple of ר׳ יעקב יצחק הורוביץ, the חוזה מלובלין, while also learning from ר׳ אברהם יהושע השל מאפטא. In 1808 he was appointed rabbi of Sátoraljaújhely (אוהעל), where his halakhic stature and charismatic Hasidic leadership drew a wide following and established an enduring regional centre. He became the ancestor and spiritual progenitor of the Sighet and Satmar dynasties. His writings unite halakhic authority, homiletics, Kabbalah and intense messianic expectation. ישמח משה on the Torah was prepared and printed after his death by his grandson ר׳ יקותיאל יהודה טייטלבוים; השיב משה preserves responsa, while תפלה למשה comments on Psalms. He died in Ujhely on 28 Tammuz 5601, 17 July 1841, and was buried there.
