ר׳ נפתלי צבי יהודה ברלין

ר׳ נפתלי צבי יהודה ברלין (1816–1893), known by the acronym Netziv, was a leading Lithuanian scholar and head of the Volozhin Yeshiva. Born in Mir, he married Rayna Batya, granddaughter of ר׳ חיים מוולוז׳ין, at fourteen and became permanently associated with Volozhin. He eventually joined the yeshiva faculty and, after a contested succession, became its principal rosh yeshiva. During roughly four decades of leadership Volozhin grew into the central advanced yeshiva of Eastern European Jewry. His scholarship combined close Talmudic analysis with unusual attention to tannaitic midrash, Geonic literature, textual variants and biblical peshat. Major works include Ha'amek She'elah on the She'iltot, Ha'amek Davar on the Torah and the responsa Meishiv Davar. He opposed communal separatism and supported Hovevei Zion while insisting on religious unity. Russian demands for curricular and administrative control culminated in the yeshiva’s closure in 1892. Ill and hoping ultimately to reach the Land of Israel, he went to Warsaw, where he died the following year.
