ר׳ נתן גשטטנר

ר׳ נתן גשטטנר (1932–2010), known from his responsa as בעל להורות נתן, was a Hungarian-born Israeli posek, dayan and rosh yeshiva. Born in Győr to ר׳ עמרם גשטטנר and Malka Schreiber, he descended from the families of ר׳ מאיר איזנשטט and ר׳ משה סופר. The family moved to Újpest in 1933. As a boy he studied with ר׳ בנימין ברגר; after the Holocaust he continued for two formative years in Antwerp under ר׳ יוסף גרינוולד, later the Pupa rebbe. In Israel he became close to ר׳ דב בריש ויידנפלד. In 1965 he was appointed rabbi of Kiryat Agudat Israel in Bnei Brak, where he established the פנים מאירות institutions and served as a dayan and halakhic teacher for the rest of his life. His principal achievement, שו״ת להורות נתן, grew to many volumes and addresses every division of practical Jewish law. Other writings include נתן פריו on Talmudic tractates and studies connected with תקפו כהן and calendrical law. He died in Bnei Brak in 2010.
