ר׳ ניסים בן ראובן גירונדי

ר׳ ניסים בן ראובן גירונדי, universally known as the Ran, was among fourteenth-century Catalonia’s leading Talmudists, halakhic decisors, preachers, and communal authorities. Although his epithet associates him with Girona and both birthplace and birth year remain disputed, the documentary centre of his adult life was Barcelona. A Torah scroll that he copied and donated there in 1336 survives as evidence of his scribal and scholarly activity. He later served as judge and headed an influential academy, training scholars including ר׳ יצחק בר ששת and ר׳ חסדאי קרשקש. His lucid commentary accompanying the digest of ר׳ יצחק אלפסי became a standard aid to practical Talmud study; his novellae, responsa, and philosophical-theological sermons likewise shaped later Sephardi learning. Communal leadership exposed him to political danger, including imprisonment with other Barcelona notables following a false accusation. He died in Barcelona during the winter of 1375–1376, possibly amid an epidemic. The record maps Barcelona rather than incorrectly treating Girona as his documented mature residence.
