ר׳ נסים בן יעקב בן נסים אבן שאהין (בקירוב 990–1062), הידוע כרבנו נסים גאון, was one of the two pre-eminent rabbinic scholars of eleventh-century North Africa, alongside ר׳ חננאל בן חושיאל. Born into the learned elite of Kairouan, he first studied with his father, ר׳ יעקב בן נסים, head of a local academy and an intermediary between North African communities and the Babylonian academies. After his father's early death, he studied under ר׳ חושיאל בן אלחנן and eventually became a leader of Kairouan's academy. Although later tradition calls him “Gaon,” he did not head one of the Babylonian Geonic academies; the title expresses the exceptional authority he acquired in the western Islamic world. His scholarship joined Babylonian Geonic learning—especially traditions received through correspondence with ר׳ האי גאון—to unusually extensive use of the Jerusalem Talmud and Palestinian rabbinic sources. He maintained a close intellectual and patronage relationship with ר׳ שמואל הנגיד in Granada, transmitting eastern legal learning westward; in 1049 his only daughter married ר׳ יהוסף הנגיד. A proposed visit by ר׳ נסים to Granada for that marriage is plausible but disputed. His principal work, מפתח מגאליק אלתלמוד, usually called ספר המפתח, identifies and explains the sources, parallels and compressed allusions needed to understand difficult Talmudic passages. His חיבור יפה מהישועה, composed in Judaeo-Arabic and known as אלפרג׳ בעד אלשדה, reshaped rabbinic and wider Near Eastern narratives into a literary collection about consolation and deliverance after distress. His surviving and fragmentary writings—commentary, legal notes, responsa, stories and liturgy—made Kairouan a crucial bridge between the Geonic academies, North Africa and al-Andalus during the last flourishing of the city's Jewish scholarly centre.
