ר׳ נתן צבי פינקל

ר׳ נתן צבי פינקל (1943–2011) was an American-born Lithuanian yeshiva leader who transformed the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem into one of the world’s largest centres of Torah study. Born in Chicago to Eliyahu Meir and Sara Finkel, he attended Jewish day school and Ida Crown Jewish Academy. During a family visit to Israel in 1957, his great-uncle ר׳ אליעזר יהודה פינקל recognized his aptitude and encouraged him to study at Mir. He returned permanently at seventeen and learned under leading Mir scholars, including ר׳ חיים קמיל. In 1964 he married Leah, daughter of ר׳ בנימין ביינוש פינקל. In February 1990 he succeeded his father-in-law as rosh yeshiva. Despite Parkinson’s disease, he continued teaching, mentoring students and fundraising internationally. Under his leadership Mir expanded from roughly one thousand students to several thousand, added study halls and developed branches including Mir Brachfeld in Modi’in Illit. He served on Degel HaTorah’s Council of Torah Sages and became known for personal attentiveness to students as much as institutional growth. He died suddenly in Jerusalem in 2011 and was buried on Har HaMenuchot. His mussar talks were collected posthumously as שיחות רבי נתן צבי.
