ר׳ פרץ בן אליהו מקורביל

ר׳ פרץ בן אליהו מקורביל (fl. later thirteenth century; d. c.1295), usually called רבנו פרץ, was one of the last and most influential French Tosafists. The son of ר׳ אליהו of Tours, he studied with ר׳ יחיאל מפריז, ר׳ שמואל מאיוורא, and ר׳ יצחק בן יוסף מקורביל, the סמ״ק. He travelled through Brabant and spent time in the German lands, where he became acquainted with ר׳ מאיר בן ברוך מרוטנבורג and helped transmit that scholar’s customs and rulings into France and Provence. Returning to Corbeil, he led a major academy and was remembered as “head of the French yeshivot.” His own explanations and the redactions made by his pupils became known as תוספות רבנו פרץ or תוספות תלמידי רבנו פרץ; material from this school entered the standard printed Tosafot. His הגהות on ספר מצוות קטן became inseparable from the later reception of his teacher’s code, while glosses on the ritual collection תשב״ץ preserved further Ashkenazi practice. He also wrote on tractates, prayer, and halakhic custom, though authorship and recension are sometimes complex because students edited oral lectures. He died before the 1298 persecutions, probably in 1295. No authenticated portrait is known.
