ר׳ שלום שכנא מלובלין

ר׳ שלום שכנא בן יוסף (c.1510–1558), known as ר׳ שלום שכנא מלובלין, was a foundational teacher of early Polish Talmudic scholarship. Born into a prominent Lublin family, he studied under ר׳ יעקב פולק and inherited his teacher’s dialectical method of pilpul. By 1528 he was already famous, and students from across Poland and beyond gathered at his Lublin yeshiva. In 1542 a royal appointment recognized him as one of the senior rabbis responsible for Polish Jewish communal affairs. His academy trained a generation that shaped Ashkenazi halakhah, most famously his student and son-in-law ר׳ משה איסרליש; other pupils included ר׳ חיים בן בצלאל. He preferred oral teaching to literary authority and reportedly instructed his son ר׳ ישראל שכנא not to publish his manuscripts, explaining why so little survives under his name. Two responsa concerning betrothal arrangements and a short decision on kiddushin preserve fragments of his rulings. The claim in the former project record that he was born and studied in Kraków was unsupported and has been removed. He lived, taught and died in Lublin in 1558.
