ר׳ שלום מזרחי שרעבי

ר׳ שלום מזרחי דידיע שרעבי (c.1720–1777), universally called הרש״ש, was a Yemenite-born kabbalist who systematized the prayer intentions of ר׳ יצחק לוריא and led Jerusalem's Bet El circle. Born in the Sharʿab region of Yemen, he travelled toward the Land of Israel by routes remembered as passing through India, Baghdad and Damascus. By the mid-eighteenth century he had reached Jerusalem and joined Beit El, the kabbalistic study house founded by ר׳ גדליה חיון in 1737. Later devotional biographies say he initially concealed his learning while serving as its caretaker; the secure historical core is his membership and eventual leadership of the academy. After ר׳ גדליה חיון's death he became its head. His method organized the highly complex Lurianic kavvanot of prayer into a disciplined interpretive system grounded in the writings of ר׳ חיים ויטאל. נהר שלום, רחובות הנהר, אמת ושלום and the manuscript prayer arrangements now known collectively as סידור הרש״ש shaped Sephardi and Mizrahi kabbalistic practice for generations. In 1751/52 the Bet El fellowship made a celebrated covenant of spiritual mutual responsibility. Documents also show him signing Jerusalem communal correspondence in 1774. He died on 10 Shevat 5537 and was buried on the Mount of Olives. No authenticated portrait survives; his tomb and manuscripts are the reliable visual witnesses.
