ר׳ שמעון יהודה שקופ
ר׳ שמעון יהודה שקופ (1860–1939) was one of the most influential Lithuanian Talmudists of the modern yeshiva world. Born in Turets, in present-day Belarus, he studied at Mir and Volozhin, where ר׳ חיים סולובייצ׳יק became his principal intellectual influence. In 1884 ר׳ אליעזר גורדון appointed him to teach at Telz. Over seventeen years there he developed a conceptual method centred on precise legal categories and underlying principles. He left during the Musar controversy, served as rabbi and teacher in Maltsh from 1903 and Bransk from 1907, and in 1920 assumed leadership of Shaar HaTorah in Grodno. He also became rabbi of Grodno’s Vorstadt district in 1926. A fundraising visit brought him to the United States in 1928; he briefly taught at RIETS before returning to Grodno. His שערי יושר, first published in 1928, systematized his approach and remains a cornerstone of lomdut. He died in Grodno shortly after the Soviet occupation in 1939. His introduction to שערי יושר articulated a lasting ethical vision: intellectual achievement should enlarge responsibility to the community rather than serve private brilliance.
