ר׳ שלמה אפרים מלונטשיץ

ר׳ שלמה אפרים בן ר׳ אהרן מלונטשיץ (c. 1550–1619), known as the בעל כלי יקר, was one of the leading Polish-Jewish preachers, biblical commentators and communal rabbis of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Born in Łęczyca—rendered Luntschitz in Jewish sources—he was originally named אפרים; שלמה was added during a life-threatening illness, as he records in his introduction to כלי יקר. He studied under ר׳ שלמה לוריא (מהרש״ל) in Lublin and later headed a yeshiva in Lviv. His early publications established him as a moralist and master preacher: עיר גיבורים appeared in 1580, עוללות אפרים in 1590 and אורח לחיים in 1595. His best-known work, כלי יקר, was first printed in Lublin in 1602. It combines close biblical reading, midrash, moral psychology and public rebuke, frequently criticizing social inequality, ostentation, corrupt leadership and sterile methods of study. In 1604 he was appointed rabbi and prominent preacher in Prague, serving the community during the generation of ר׳ יהודה ליווא בן בצלאל (מהר״ל). His Prague writings included שפתי דעת and עמודי שש. He also composed penitential poems after violence struck Prague in 1611. His students and intellectual circle helped transmit Polish Torah learning into Bohemia; later tradition counts figures such as ר׳ יום טוב ליפמן הלר among those influenced by him. He died in Prague in 1619 and was buried in its Old Jewish Cemetery. כלי יקר remains widely printed in editions of the Torah and מקראות גדולות.
