ר׳ שלמה בן אברהם אבן פרחון

ר׳ שלמה בן אברהם אבן פרחון was a twelfth-century Hebrew lexicographer, grammarian and biblical philologist who carried the mature Judaeo-Arabic linguistic scholarship of al-Andalus into Hebrew-reading Christian Europe. He described himself as coming from Qal'a, conventionally identified by major reference works with Calatayud in Aragon, although the identification has been disputed in some modern Hebrew accounts. In his introduction he names ר׳ אפרים, ר׳ יהודה הלוי and ר׳ אברהם אבן עזרא among the scholars from whom he learned; the precise character, dates and locations of these relationships cannot always be reconstructed. After leaving Iberia he settled in Salerno in southern Italy. He reports that its Jewish scholars knew ר׳ מנחם בן סרוק's lexicon but had little access to the richer Hebrew grammatical literature written in Judaeo-Arabic in Spain. To bridge that linguistic divide, he composed מחברת הערוך entirely in Hebrew and completed it in Salerno on 1 Kislev 4921, in late 1160. The work combines a substantial introduction to biblical Hebrew grammar and prosody with an alphabetically organized biblical lexicon. It openly condenses and transmits the grammatical and lexical achievements of ר׳ יהודה חיוג׳ and especially ר׳ יונה אבן ג׳נאח, while also drawing on ר׳ מנחם בן סרוק, ר׳ שלמה יצחקי and Andalusian poetry, including material by ר׳ שלמה אבן גבירול. Around a decade later ר׳ יהודה אבן תיבון accused the work of excessive dependence on ר׳ יונה אבן ג׳נאח, but modern scholarship regards a simple charge of plagiarism as misleading: ר׳ שלמה declared his sources, translated an Arabic scholarly tradition for a new audience, reorganized it for Hebrew readers and added independent exegetical, historical, ritual, scientific and halakhic observations. His dictionary is therefore both a witness to Spanish Hebrew philology and a major channel by which that learning reached Italy and northern Europe. Nothing secure is known about his later movements, death date or death place.
