ר׳ שלמה בן אברהם מן ההר

ר׳ שלמה בן אברהם מן ההר (fl. early thirteenth century), also called ר׳ שלמה ממונפלייה, was a Provençal Talmudist and the initiator of the anti-Maimonidean campaign of the 1230s. His surname מן ההר renders Montpellier, and he served as a rabbinic authority there. Alarmed by philosophical and allegorical readings associated with מורה הנבוכים and ספר המדע, he and his pupils ר׳ יונה בן אברהם גירונדי and ר׳ דוד בן שאול sought support from northern French rabbis. In 1232 their allies issued bans against the study of the philosophical works of ר׳ משה בן מימון and secular sciences, provoking counter-bans from Maimonidean communities in Provence. Medieval polemic accused his faction of informing Dominican or Franciscan authorities and causing the burning of Maimonidean books; modern scholarship considers direct responsibility highly doubtful, so the accusation is not presented as fact. His standing as a Talmudic scholar continued, and ר׳ מנחם המאירי cites him among חכמי ההר. No securely identifiable independent book survives; his legacy rests chiefly on controversial letters, reported rulings and the wider debate. His fate after the controversy is unknown, and the lifespan used here is only a cartographic convention.
