ר׳ שלמה וולבה

ר׳ שלמה וולבה (1914–2005) was a German-born Israeli mussar teacher whose educational method shaped the postwar yeshivah world. Born in Berlin as August Wilhelm Wolbe, he studied briefly at the University of Berlin and at the Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary before seeking intensive yeshivah study in Frankfurt and Montreux. He then entered the Mir Yeshiva in the town of Mir, now Belarus, where ר׳ ירוחם ליבוביץ became his decisive teacher. As a German citizen he could not accompany the Mir students eastward during the war; he remained in neutral Sweden, worked with Jewish refugees and wrote for Swedish Jews. He immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1946 and became a central spiritual educator at Yeshivat Be’er Yaakov, serving there for more than three decades. In later years he taught in Jerusalem and developed small-group frameworks for advanced mussar study. His two-volume עלי שור joined disciplined self-observation, classical mussar and close attention to normal psychological development; זריעה ובנין בחינוך distilled his approach to parenting and education. He opposed both shallow emotionalism and coercive religious growth, stressing gradual acquisition, human dignity and sustained personal work. He died in Jerusalem and was buried at Har HaMenuchot.
