ר׳ שמואל אליעזר הלוי איידלס

ר׳ שמואל אליעזר הלוי איידלס (1555–1631), known by the acronym מהרש״א, was one of the most influential commentators on the Babylonian Talmud. Born into a distinguished rabbinic family, he married the daughter of ר׳ משה אשכנזי. His mother-in-law Edel supported a large yeshiva that he directed in Poznań from about 1585 until her death; in gratitude he adopted the family designation Eidels. In 1590 he joined leading rabbis at Lublin in opposing the purchase of rabbinic offices. After the Poznań academy closed, he served as rabbi of Chełm from 1610, became rabbi and rosh yeshiva of Lublin in 1614, then served Tykocin and finally Ostroh. His חידושי הלכות closely analyze the Talmud together with the commentaries of ר׳ שלמה יצחקי and the Tosafists, while חידושי אגדות treat narrative passages as intellectually and ethically serious components of the same discourse. He regretted their separate publication and urged later printers to integrate them, as standard Talmud editions eventually did. His learning combined legal analysis, biblical interpretation, philosophy and an unusually sustained engagement with aggadah. He was also remembered for supporting students and travelers. He died in Ostroh on 30 November 1631, and his tomb remains associated with the city’s historic Jewish cemetery.
