ר׳ שמחה בונים בונהרד מפשיסחה

ר׳ שמחה בונים בונהרד מפשיסחה (1765–1827), widely known as ר׳ בונים מפשיסחה, was one of the formative leaders of Polish Hasidism. Born in Wodzisław to the preacher ר׳ צבי הירש בונהרד, he received both traditional rabbinic learning and exposure to the rational culture of German Jewry. He studied in Mattersdorf and Nikolsburg, worked as a merchant and pharmacist, and encountered Hasidism through ר׳ משה לייב מסאסוב, ר׳ ישראל מקוז׳ניץ and especially ר׳ יעקב יצחק רבינוביץ, the יהודי הקדוש. After the latter’s death in 1813, ר׳ שמחה בונים led the Peshischa circle. He stressed intellectual honesty, inward truth, independence and disciplined self-examination, resisting mechanical piety and the pursuit of wonders. This demanding approach provoked opposition but decisively influenced Polish Hasidism. His disciples included ר׳ מנחם מנדל מקוצק, ר׳ יצחק מאיר אלתר and ר׳ מרדכי יוסף ליינר. He deliberately published no book; teachings preserved orally were later assembled in קול שמחה and other collections. He died in Przysucha on 12 Elul 5587, 4 September 1827.
