ר׳ צדוק הכהן מלובלין

ר׳ צדוק בן ר׳ יעקב הכהן רבינוביץ (1823–1900), known as ר׳ צדוק הכהן מלובלין, was a Hasidic master, Talmudist, halakhist, kabbalist and unusually wide-ranging religious thinker. Born in Kreuzburg in Courland to a Lithuanian rabbinic family, he was orphaned young and raised by his uncle ר׳ יוסף בן אשר, a student of ר׳ חיים מוולוז׳ין. His early formation was learned and non-Hasidic. A marital crisis led him to travel through Poland seeking the exceptional authorization of one hundred rabbis for divorce; the precise route is imperfectly preserved. During those journeys he encountered Hasidism and became a disciple of ר׳ מרדכי יוסף ליינר מאיזביצה. After his teacher's death in 1854, he supported his friend ר׳ יהודה לייב איגר as leader of the Lublin circle and spent more than three decades in study, prayer, writing and relative seclusion. Only after ר׳ יהודה לייב איגר died in 1888 did he accept leadership. His thought extends the Izbica concern with divine providence, human will, sin and repentance while developing original accounts of Oral Torah, historical change, imagination, language, psychology, sacred time and the spiritual potential latent in every Jew. He combined extraordinary command of rabbinic and kabbalistic sources with interests extending to astronomy, mathematics and general knowledge. He refused to publish most writings during his lifetime but authorized posthumous publication; many remaining manuscripts were later destroyed in the Lublin ghetto. His surviving books—especially צדקת הצדיק, פרי צדיק, רסיסי לילה and תקנת השבין—became foundational works of modern Hasidic thought and influenced figures including ר׳ אליהו אליעזר דסלר, ר׳ יצחק הוטנר and ר׳ גדליה שור.
