ר׳ יעקב אריה אלתר

ר׳ יעקב אריה אלתר (born 18 May 1939) is the eighth Gerrer Rebbe and a senior leader of Agudath Israel's rabbinic council. He was born in Łódź to ר׳ שמחה בונים אלתר, later the sixth Gerrer Rebbe and author of לב שמחה, and Yuta Hena, a daughter of ר׳ נחמיה אלתר. He was named for ר׳ יעקב אריה גוטרמן of Radzymin. In 1940, amid the destruction of Polish Jewish life, he left Europe with his father and grandfather ר׳ אברהם מרדכי אלתר and reached Mandatory Palestine. He grew up in Jerusalem, studied at the Etz Chaim Talmud Torah and was formed within the post-war rebuilding of Ger. He married Shoshana, daughter of ר׳ מנחם מנדל וייץ, a leader of Yeshivat Chiddushei HaRim. For many years he lived and studied in Bnei Brak, particularly at the Rashi Shtiebel. After his father became Rebbe in 1977, ר׳ יעקב אריה increasingly handled institutional and political affairs for Ger and Agudath Israel. His uncle ר׳ פינחס מנחם אלתר led the dynasty from 1992 until March 1996; following his death, ר׳ יעקב אריה succeeded him. His leadership has centred on an extensive network of Gerrer synagogues, yeshivot, kollelim and schools in Israel and diaspora communities, alongside membership in the presidium of מועצת גדולי התורה. He relocated from Bnei Brak to Jerusalem in 2011, and the movement's principal court and large central beit midrash are now based there. Because he is living, reports concerning wealth, politics and internal disputes are treated as contemporary claims requiring careful sourcing rather than settled biography. No independently authored major sefer is securely catalogued under his name; published institutional volumes chiefly preserve addresses, guidance or events held in his presence.
