ר׳ יעקב בן יהודה וייל
ר׳ יעקב בן יהודה וייל, known as מהרי״ו or מהר״י וייל, was one of the principal halakhic authorities of fifteenth-century Germany. Born around 1385 at Weil, he studied in Mainz under ר׳ יעקב בן משה הלוי מולין, the מהרי״ל, who ordained him. By 1422 he was active at Nuremberg. Although authorized to establish a yeshiva there, he initially declined to displace the older local scholar ר׳ זלמן כ״ץ, reflecting the conciliatory temperament evident in his responsa. He later became rabbi of Erfurt, from where communities across Ashkenaz addressed legal questions to him. His decisions emphasize clear Talmudic reasoning and practical adjudication while criticizing scholars who claimed special social privilege merely from rabbinic status. שו״ת מהרי״ו, first printed posthumously in Venice in 1549, became a major source for ר׳ משה איסרליש. Its appended הלכות שחיטה ובדיקה circulated especially widely, passing through dozens of editions and attracting commentaries. The exact year and place of his death are unknown, but he was no longer alive by the mid-1450s. He should not be confused with his teacher, the מהרי״ל.
