ר׳ יחזקאל הלוי לנדא

ר׳ יחזקאל בן ר׳ יהודה הלוי לנדא (7 November 1713–29 April 1793), known as the נודע ביהודה and הצל״ח, was an eighteenth-century halakhic authority, communal rabbi and head of the Prague yeshivah. Born at Opatów, he entered the renowned Brody kloyz after his marriage and became a dayan there. In 1745 he became rabbi and head of the academy at Yampol. His 1752 אגרת השלום attempted to mediate the dispute between ר׳ יעקב עמדין and ר׳ יהונתן אייבשיץ. Appointed chief rabbi of Prague in 1754/1755, he led the community for nearly four decades through Habsburg reforms, war and Jewish religious controversies. His responsa נודע ביהודה address practical questions from across Europe; its first edition appeared at Prague in 1776 and a second, posthumous series in 1810/1811. His other writings include דגול מרבבה and ציון לנפש חיה. He died in Prague on 17 Iyar 5553 and was buried in the Žižkov Jewish cemetery.
