ר׳ יהודה בן שמואל אבן בלעם

ר׳ יהודה בן שמואל אבן בלעם, known in Arabic as Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyā ibn Balʿam, was an eleventh-century Andalusian biblical commentator, Hebrew grammarian and liturgical poet. Almost nothing securely biographical survives beyond ר׳ משה אבן עזרא’s later account: he came from a respected Toledo family, settled in Seville, possessed a powerful memory and compressed style, and became famous for unusually sharp criticism of other scholars. His writings confirm a sustained polemic with ר׳ משה אבן ג׳יקטילה and combine Arabic grammatical science with rabbinic and halakhic interpretation. All his scholarly works were composed in Arabic, usually Judeo-Arabic. His כתאב אלתרג׳יח commented on the Pentateuch; נקאט אלמקרא supplied concise commentary on Prophets and Writings; other books treated biblical miracles, homonyms, particles and denominative verbs. Some works survive only fragmentarily, through Hebrew translations or in quotations by later writers. His influence is especially visible in the biblical commentaries of ר׳ אברהם אבן עזרא, while ר׳ משה בן מימון names him among perceptive exegetes in אגרת תחיית המתים. He also composed the Hebrew selihah בזכרי על משכבי, still used in Sephardi penitential liturgy. Earlier scholarship attributed הוריית הקורא and טעמי המקרא to him, but modern research rejects that attribution. The familiar dates 1000–1070 are conventional rather than documented; his exact death date and place remain unknown.
