ר׳ ירחמיאל גרשון אדלשטיין

ר׳ ירחמיאל גרשון אדלשטיין (1923–2023) was a Soviet-born Israeli rosh yeshiva and a foremost leader of the Lithuanian-Haredi community. Born in Shumyachi, he studied Torah clandestinely under Soviet rule before his family immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1934. His father, ר׳ צבי יהודה אדלשטיין, became rabbi of Ramat HaSharon. After Lomza Yeshiva in Petah Tikva, he joined Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak in 1943 as one of its earliest students, soon joined its faculty, and eventually became rosh yeshiva. In later life he led major Lithuanian-Haredi educational and communal bodies. He died in Bnei Brak at age one hundred.
