ר׳ ישראל פרידמן מרוז׳ין

ר׳ ישראל פרידמן מרוז׳ין (1796–1850), the Holy Ruzhiner, founded one of the most influential dynastic traditions in nineteenth-century Hasidism. Born at Pohrebyshche, he was a great-grandson of ר׳ דוב בער ממזריטש through ר׳ אברהם המלאך and a descendant of ר׳ מנחם נחום מטשרנוביל through his mother. After the deaths of his father and elder brother, he assumed leadership while still a teenager and eventually established an imposing court at Ruzhin. His consciously regal style—fine dress, splendid surroundings and ceremonial dignity—expressed a theology of Jewish spiritual kingship rather than personal ascetic display. His influence extended to the Hasidic communities of the Land of Israel. Russian authorities imprisoned him in 1838 on an unsubstantiated murder allegation. After nearly two years he escaped the empire and re-established his court at Sadigura in Austrian Bukovina. From there he supported construction of Jerusalem’s Tiferet Yisrael Synagogue. His six sons established the Sadigura, Boyan, Chortkov, Husiatyn and related branches, making Ruzhin a foundational Hasidic dynasty. He died and was buried in Sadigura in 1850.
