ר׳ ישראל ליפקין מסלנט

ר׳ ישראל ליפקין מסלנט (1809–1883), known as ר׳ ישראל סלנטר, founded the Musar movement. Born in Žagarė to ר׳ זאב וולף ליפקין, he settled after marriage in Salant and studied especially with ר׳ יוסף זונדל מסלנט. He taught in Vilna, where his emotionally intense ethical instruction developed into an organised programme of character formation. During the 1848 cholera epidemic he publicly stressed preservation of life; after refusing a post in the state rabbinical seminary he moved to Kovno and established a Musar-oriented yeshiva. From 1857 he worked in Prussia and Germany, living or teaching in Halberstadt, Memel, Königsberg and Berlin. He published the journal תבונה and encouraged institutions that shaped the Lithuanian Musar movement through disciples including ר׳ יצחק בלאזר, ר׳ נפתלי אמסטרדם and ר׳ שמחה זיסל זיו. Late in life he organised Russian Jewish immigrants in Paris, then returned to Königsberg, where he died. His surviving letters and teachings emphasise disciplined self-examination and the equal gravity of interpersonal and ritual duties.
