ר׳ יצחק בר ששת ברפת

ר׳ יצחק בר ששת ברפת, known by the acronym Rivash, was a major late-medieval Sephardi halakhist and communal rabbi. Born in Valencia in 1326, he spent his formative and early professional years in Barcelona, where he studied with ר׳ פרץ הכהן and especially ר׳ ניסים בן ראובן גירונדי. For many years he supported himself in commerce rather than accepting rabbinic office. His prominence also exposed him to communal danger: he and other Barcelona leaders were jailed after a false accusation. He subsequently held rabbinic posts in Zaragoza, Calatayud, and Valencia. The persecutions of 1391 transformed his life. After coercion and flight, he crossed to North Africa and settled in Algiers, where he became the community’s leading rabbinic authority despite local controversy. His hundreds of responsa address civil and ritual law, communal governance, persecution, conversion, and the practical conditions of Jewish life across Spain and North Africa. They preserve invaluable historical testimony as well as precise halakhic analysis and deeply influenced later decisors, including ר׳ יוסף קארו. He died in Algiers in 1408. No authenticated lifetime portrait is known.
