ר׳ יצחק בן ברוך אבן אלבאליה
ר׳ יצחק בן ברוך אבן אלבאליה was an Andalusian Talmudist, mathematician, astronomer, court astrologer, communal leader and bibliophile. Born in Córdoba in 1035 into an old Iberian Jewish family, he received an education spanning rabbinic literature and the mathematical sciences. His maternal grandson ר׳ אברהם אבן דאוד reports that a learned visitor from Périgord, remembered as ר׳ פריגורש, taught him in youth; the identity of this teacher and the location of their study are otherwise obscure. ר׳ יצחק became close to ר׳ שמואל הנגיד and then to ר׳ יהוסף הנגיד in Granada. At about thirty he began קופת הרוכלים, an ambitious commentary on difficult Talmudic passages, but never completed it. In 1065 he dedicated מחברת סוד העיבור, a mathematical-astronomical treatment of the principles of the Jewish calendar, to ר׳ יהוסף. Neither work survives as a complete text. When ר׳ יהוסף was killed and Granada's Jewish community attacked in 1066, the Nagid family's library was dispersed; ר׳ יצחק spent substantial sums recovering and reassembling its books. He then established himself in Córdoba. In 1069 al-Muʿtamid ibn ʿAbbād, ruler of Seville, brought him into the royal entourage as court astronomer and astrologer and appointed him rabbi and nasi over the Jews of the kingdom. These roles joined scientific expertise, palace access and communal jurisdiction. Later Jewish tradition credits him with using his influence to improve Jewish conditions, although few individual interventions can be independently reconstructed. In Seville he assembled a major scholarly library around the recovered Nagid collection and made the court city an important Jewish intellectual centre. ר׳ משה אבן עזרא praised him as a poet and master stylist, but no securely delimited poetic corpus can presently be assigned to him. Two responsa survive: one concerning tzitzit, preserved in תמים דעים of ר׳ אברהם בן דוד מפושקיירא, and another preserved in Judaeo-Arabic. His legal exchanges and objections to ר׳ יצחק אלפסי reveal substantive disagreement between two major contemporary halakhic authorities. A modern manuscript study has recovered responses by ר׳ יצחק אלפסי to criticisms attributed to ר׳ יצחק אבן אלבאליה, allowing the controversy to be studied beyond later anecdote. The fall of al-Muʿtamid's kingdom to the Almoravids in 1091 ended the political setting of his Seville career; sources place his last years and death in Granada in 1094, though the precise date of his move is less firmly documented than his Seville appointment and Granada death. According to the family account in ספר הקבלה, shortly before dying he told his seventeen-year-old son ר׳ ברוך בן יצחק אבן אלבאליה to seek reconciliation and study with ר׳ יצחק אלפסי. The latter received the youth warmly and became a second father to him. The account may preserve genuine family memory—ר׳ אברהם אבן דאוד was ר׳ יצחק's maternal grandson—but it was written decades later and should not be treated as a verbatim deathbed transcript. ר׳ ברוך later became a significant scholar and colleague of ר׳ יוסף אבן מיגאש. Through his daughter, ר׳ יצחק was also the grandfather of ר׳ אברהם אבן דאוד, whose historical writing preserved the fullest narrative of his life.
