ר׳ יצחק מקורביל

ר׳ יצחק בן יוסף מקורביל (approximately 1210–1280), known as the סמ״ק, was a French Tosafist and halakhist. He studied in the Paris academy of his father-in-law ר׳ יחיאל מפריז and under the scholars of Évreux, especially ר׳ שמואל מאיוורא. Settled at Corbeil, he became renowned for piety and teaching; his students included ר׳ פרץ בן אליהו מקורביל, ר׳ ברוך חיים בן מנחם מניאור and ר׳ יוסף בן אברהם. At their urging he completed עמודי הגולה, usually called ספר מצוות קטן, in 1277. Drawing heavily on ר׳ משה מקוצי’s ספר מצוות גדול, he recast the commandments into a concise practical handbook arranged for regular study, combining law, ethics and religious exhortation. Communities in France and Germany quickly adopted the work, and successive scholars surrounded it with glosses, notably הגהות רבנו פרץ. He also composed collections of ritual decisions and Talmudic material, only fragments of which survive. The סמ״ק’s portability and daily-study structure gave it lasting influence in Ashkenazic legal culture.
